Delivered on behalf of the British Institute of Interior Design, we were delighted to be involved with another CPD event on the 21st February at Steinway Hall courtesy of Steinway's Managing Director, Craig Terry. The idea for the event was initially sketched out by Craig and Neil Stevenson when they first met at an event in London's Park Lane. Both companies are BIID members and Royal Warrant Holders and being both at the top of our respective disciplines it seemed we might be able to develop a suitable CPD to share through the Institute. The result of which was the development of five informative talks which formed the backbone of the days Continual Professional Development programme.

This year the Royal Warrant holder's England versus Scotland annual golf tournament was hosted at the Hunstanton Golf Club in Norfolk. The course is a 'Links Course', a term which is derived from the fact that the land nestles between the sea and arable ground further inland, thereby 'linking' the two. These courses, often very sandy by nature, are not suited for growing crops or for development. They are barren areas devoid of trees and shelter from the sea, usually making playing golf a real challenge. However, luck was on our side as we were not only spared the torrential rain forecasted, but even the wind was benign and we even had some sunshine.

Woodlands once covered hundreds of thousands of acres of land and provided us humans with shelter, areas for gathering and hunting food and natural products which, once converted, would help us in our everyday lives. As a valuable resource, woodlands were treated with respect and farmed to produce the charcoal and timber required to support communities. As such local communities managed the woodland in a sustainable way, ensuring that it catered for every generation.

Keen to alleviate this lack of interest, Proskills have launched the 'MakeIT' programme in support of schools and students. It acquaints students with how furniture is designed and made, and takes them through product research, material usage, sourcing raw (and sustainable) materials through to production of completed pieces.

The Princethorpe Woodlands Living Landscape Partnership scheme was established in 2004 by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust. Originally it only covered 406 hectares (now 618) centring on Ryton Wood SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), Wappenbury Wood and Old Nun Wood. Although these woodlands are still very rich in wildlife there were increasing concerns over habitat fragmentation and wildlife becoming more vulnerable to change. As a result the Trust looked into the wider landscape, scaling their approach to include a further 17 woodlands in the landscape. In order to achieve the objectives of the project the Trust has needed to work in partnership with over 14 other organisations all fully committed to trying to protect, restore and enhance the largest collection of semi-natural ancient woodlands in Warwickshire.

Whilst the world does face some enormous challenges it turns out we already have the tools at our disposal to deal with them - and the future, far from being a damage limitation exercise, could be a renaissance.

'Manufacturing too 'uncool' as a career choice' (Vince) Cable told. In a recent article [The Daily Telegraph January 26, 2011 Page B5] the newspaper's report specifically references engineering when it states; 49pc of 7-11 year olds “think it would be boring to be an engineer”. Fortunately we haven't started employing our trainees this young, but with manufacturing having been decimated many years ago, we suspect this is attitude towards manufacturing continues amongst older students too. But why does this general malaise seem to be present? Do this country's mentors take some responsibility, or is it the press (always an easy target), or is it from within the sector itself when we see tomorrow's engineers and cabinetmakers giving the industry a wide berth?

As you may recall at the beginning of December we sent out a campaign to generate a little bit of seasonal fun which we called 'Find the Reindeer'. Apparently Santa and his famous reindeer had lost many of their friends in the run up to Christmas and it was your job to find them hidden amongst the pages of our website. Many of you entered into the spirit of things, particularly the closer we got to the holidays by submitting your answers and tie-break question. In total we hid 16 reindeer and the closest answer came from Ms Kelly Gower at Walter Lilly who identified 12 of them, so well done Kelly who will be receiving a fantastic bottle of Pol Roger champagne shortly.
