You may recall N E J Stevenson’s considerable involvement earlier this year with the extensive restoration of the 12th Century Great Tower at Dover Castle, a project that English Heritage commissioned with us back in January. Despite being particularly demanding, this highly enjoyable and tremendously satisfying experience for us, culminated in the official re-opening of The Great Tower in July.
Entirely designed and produced by our team of designers and cabinet makers, this exhaustive catalogue of furniture included; the King’s and Queen’s thrones, armoires, chests, beds and even the replacement of a fully working wellhead. English Heritage also appointed armourers, embroiderers and stonemasons to completely return the Tower to the period of Henry II.
To incorporate news of the furniture we carefully produced, Channel 4 sent its Time Team film crew to our offices to film this wonderful story that was due for screening on the 19th December 2009.
At the start of the programme, Tony Robinson explains, in his "piece to camera", the reasons for the team's visit to the site, during which he enthusiastically encourages the archaeologists to explain their decisions, discoveries and conclusions. He tries to ensure that everything is comprehensible to the archaeologically uninitiated!
Time Team regularly receives two to three million viewers, with at least 20 million turning on at some point over any one series.
